Smiling Student

Our Project

The Education Foundation of California is proud to help establish the San Benito County Polytechnic Academy (SBCPA), a new and free public charter high school for San Benito County students.

The San Benito County Polytechnic Academy will create a comprehensive, learner-centered community that emphasizes safe, positive relationships with peers and adults, encourages leadership, and provides individualized attention to each student. As a result, students will graduate with a California high school diploma, ready for college, having completed college-level courses before graduation, and prepared with workforce certificates for entry-level positions in high-demand career sectors.

SBCPA will create comprehensive, learner-centered communities that balance:

  • Academic education

  • Dual enrollment

  • Career technical education

  • Life skills development

  • Community service

  • Career navigation/college preparation, and

  • Leadership development.

SBCPA believes that students become disconnected from traditional school settings for various reasons and thus has developed a plan to address those needs. Through extensive research and based on best practices, we have developed a program that targets low-income, high-need students at-risk of dropping out, having dropped out or are disconnected from the traditional school setting. SBCPA begins with addressing the academic gaps that exist for the student through its initial assessments and placement in appropriate courses. Students balance their academics with college and career exploration and navigation upon entry to the school. The initial assessment includes placement with a counselor who will work with them weekly to ensure that attendance and academic progress are being met.

Healthcare, Agriculture, Technology, and Construction are high-demand career sectors in the tri-county area. To prepare our students to enter such careers, SBCPA will partner with local businesses, community colleges, and universities to provide dual enrollment options for students to begin to complete their post-secondary certificates and degrees.

Industry partners will facilitate real-world experiences for students as they explore their career options. In addition, as students progress towards completing their high school diploma, they will engage in internships that will help immerse them in career options and prepare them for entry-level jobs as they complete their post-secondary certificates and degrees.

SBCPA will create an environment where students:

  • Earn a high school diploma and workforce certifications

  • Complete courses that lead to college credit and degree completion

  • Access pathways towards attaining middle-class wage careers

  • Engage in community service activities,

  • Receive academic and career navigation counseling

  • Can count on positive peer support and school culture

  • Play a role in school governance

  • Develop leadership skills and a sense of agency

  • Learn about life skills and financial literacy; and

  • Get support after graduation
